Pukekos
Sir, —It is to be hoped that there will not be the wanton slaughter of pukekos this coming shooting season that there has been in past years. As a poor game bird, both in the field and on the table, many have been shot to rot where they fall. Drainage schemes have greatly reduced their habitat in recent years and only in a few isolated localities do they now exist in numbers possibly sufficient to do any alleged damage. Surely no true sportsman would destroy these interesting native birds, which become very tame near settled areas, just because there is nothing better to shoot at. —Yours, etc., KIWI. April 19, 1957.
