JUGOSLAVIA AND THE CHURCH
Tito Regime Seeks Talks (Nj:. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8 pjm.) KRASIC (Jugoslavia), April 20. The Jugoslav Government was prepared to start talks on relations with the Roman Catholic Church if the Vatican were willing, the Communist leader of the Croatian Republic (Dr. Vladimir Bakaric) said today. Dr. Bakaric said that Jugoslavia would never restore diplomatic relations with the Vatican. It was desired to liquidate only the political opposition of the Church to give the people the choice whether they wanted religion or not. Roman Catholic relations with the Tito regime are virtually nonexistent because of strong opposition by the church to the Communist system. The Roman Catholic Archbishop of Zagreb, Cardinal Aloysius Stepinac, lives under house arrest since his trial on charges of collaborating with the pro-Nazi Croatian Quisling State during the German occupation. In a brief talk with reporters today, the Cardinal said he knew nothing of the moves to settle relations between the Church and the State.
