AUSTRALIAN TEAM OPENS TOUR

University Match In Auckland

(New Zealand Press Association) AUCKLAND. April 19. The Australian Universities’ fencing team opened its New Zealand tour with one win and three losses against a moderately strong Auckland University College team at the Y.W.C.A. Hall yesterday. The bouts occupied almost eight hours. The list of wins and losses does little justice to the Australians’ efforts. In the three weapon men’s Ipouts, particularly, the Australians, having to use the same four each time against Auckland’s more diversified teams, fought especially hard and well.

Australia won the men’s foil 9-7, lost on the count-back to Auckland 64-55 in the epee, and was beaten in the sabre 7-9. The Australian girls were not quite as impressive in the foils, being beaten by Auckland 10-6.
