Miss Amy Sayle, who has served both as a councillor and aiderman on tfie London County Council and is now on a tour of New Zealand, was the speaker at a meeting of the Christchurch branch of the National Council of Women on Thursday evening. Miss Sayle discussed recent trends in housing in London and mentioned the great improvement in tenants’ attitudes to their homes in recent years. She also spoke on hospitals, which have been administered by the Minister of Health since 1946.

When the Christchurch branch of the National Council of Women met on Thursday evening motions of sympathy were expressed with the secretary (Miss S. Lilly) in the death of her sister, and with Mrs C. O. Mathias, in the death of her son-in-law, Flight Lieutenant Bruce Magill.

A programme arranged by the drama group from the New Brighton Townswomen’s Guild, including humorous sketches and a recitation, was presented at the April meeting of the Aranui Townswomen’s Guild. Miss McLeod gave items on a piano accordion.

A demonstration by Mrs Woolley on the making of floral sprays was given at the garden circle of the Somerfield Townswomen’s Guild at its April meeting. Mrs Hunter gave a report of the recent convention, and Mrs Baker welcomed a member from the Nelson union. A 20 years’ service badge was presented to Mrs Gamble. Certain public libraries in Britain are reserving, as an experiment, a special room where schoolchildren can do their homework. The scheme is aimed at solving the problem of lack of space in many homes and of distractions such as radio and television, which prevent children from devoting themselves to their school work.

The president of the United Women’s Bowling Club (Mrs E. B. Rhodes) entertained members at afternoon tea recently and presented trophies for competitions held during the season. Dried leaves apd flowers were the subject of a talk given by Mrs McLachlan at the April meeting of the Shirley-St. Albans Garden Club. Mrs B. E. Henderson presided. Mr Smith gave a talk on fuchsias at the April meeting of the Spreydon Garden Club. Mrs Woodcock, who presided, thanked the speaker. The hostesses were Mesdames Savill, Murray, and McKenzie.
