Croquet Gained From U.K. Tour
Interest in croquet in New Zealand increased considerably in the last year, mainly because of the recent New Zealand tour of England. In England also, the tour created a great interest, and several prominent English players intend to tour this country in the next two years. The appearance of these players, together with the expected Australian team, will be of benefit to the game. The visit of Mr and Mrs M. Reckitt, of England, is expected to to be highlight of next season. The couple intend to play in New Zealand tournaments next year, and the appearance of such topline players is expected to further increase the interest.
The sport in England has caught on well with the younger players. At Cambridge University, for instance. 40 students play the game. Outstanding among the younger players are Mr W. Wormerod, a Cambridge undergraduate, and Mr John Solomon. The outstanding English players in the last test series were Major Stone, Dr. Wiggins and Mr E. P. Cotter, who are considered supreme in world croquet. These men are expected to visit New Zealand in the 1958-59 season.
