WEST AFRICAN VOYAGE
Voyage of the Victory. By Captain Dod Orsbourne. Frederick Muller, through OswaldSealy. 255 pp.
Dod Orsbourne, seaman and author, has made another small boat voyage, this time to the west coast of Africa, and up the Gambia river. He and the mate of the Victory also did some overland travelling. In this book he gives a graphic account of their adventures, including the pagan wedding ceremony, in which he married the mate. Captain Orsbourne also offers some comment on the countries visited, their peoples and their way of life; comment based, perhaps, on a rather superficial examination of the facts. ' ’ The voyage ended in shipwreck and the loss of the Victory. More sympathy will be felt for the mate than for the master.
