GRAIN, SEED AND PRODUCE

Oats Shipped To North Island (By Our Commercial Editor) A few inquiries from the North Island for oats have been received this week, but other business has been negligible. With the approach of Easter—and the further dislocation to trade this year caused by Anzac Day falling in the same week—merchants are not keen to add to their stocks just now. Partridge peas have been scarce in Britain, according to the monthly review of the United Kingdom market received this week by the Bank of New Zealand. For March-April prices of 61s 6d to 62s per cwt, c.i.f., have been quoted, the bank says. Local merchants said yesterday the market appeared to have eased a little recently.

Supplies of most small seeds have been in excess of demand in Britain, the bank’s report says. “Buyers will entertain only limited purchases at low prices, and there is nothing at the moment to indicate any improvement in the position. “Quotations for June-September shipment, c.i.f., are: Ryegrass, mother perennial, 77s 6d to 80s per cwt, permanent pasture 73s ic 755; short rotation, mother 755, standard 70s to 72s 6d. White clover, mother seed 365 s to 3855, certified p.p. 350 s to 3705. “Prices for chewings fescue and brown top have varied considerably, but buyers have been purchasing Oregon seeds. Buyers of crested dogstail have purchased new seed at down to 250 s c.i.f. Recent offers it. over 300 s have not interested British merchants.

“The result of the red clover harvest in New Zealand is awaited. Canadian altaswede can be bought at 285 s ex store and English wood at 240 s per cwt or less.”
