CAR PASSENGER KILLED

Collision Near Burnham

One man was killed and nine persons were injured—three were admitted to hospital—when two cars collided near Burnham Military Camp yesterday morning.

The man killed was: William Walsh, a student at Canterbury Agricultural College, Lincoln.

Those admitted to hospital are Mrs Beatrice Alison Knight, of Tai Tapu. John Herbert Elworthy, and Edward Tapley, both of Repton street, Christchurch. The condition of Mrs Knight and Mr Tapley was reported last evening to be satisfactory, and Mr Elworthy’s condition was said to be improving. Mr Walsh was a passenger in the car driven by Mr Elworthy. The other car was driven by Mr A. W. Knight.

The accident occurred at the intersection of Bethels road and Selwyn road. Mr Knight, his mother, father, and two child passengers were treated privately, Mr G. Vatten, the fourth passenger in Mr Elworthy’s car, also suffered minor injuries. Dr. W. G. Volckman, of Leeston, attended the injured at the scene of the accident, and those admitted to hospital were brought to Christchurch by a St. John ambulance.
