Won £125,000 By Mistake

(Rec. 11 p.m.) ORANGE, Apr. 17. Twenty farmers and workers today won £125.000 among them because of a mistake. The mistake was made last October by Mr W. F. Hughes, who services tractors in the Orange district of Western New South Wales. He sent a £lOO cheque to the organisers of a lottery in Hobart, but he dated it 1952 instead of 1956. Instead of issuing him a ticket immediately, the organisers had to return the cheque for Mr Hughes to correct and initial it. As a result, he was issued ticket 1448, which today won the £125,000 first prize. Mr Hughes—who said today he was “about 49, but felt 70” after his win—said the 19 others who shared his success were all customers of his, farmers and workers. Ticket No. 1447, one off the first prize, was held by a New Zealander.
