Sir Arthur Tyndall, president of the Arbitration Court, has accepted the position of a patron of the Association of Combined Apprentices of Canterbury. The High Commissioner for Ceylon in Australia and New Zealand (Mr P. R. Gunasekara) was the guest of the Canterbury Manufacturers’ Association’s council at afternoon tea yesterday. During his first visit to Christchurch, Mr Gunasekara has visited a number of factories. He will return to Australia tomorrow.

Mr W. L. Martin, Railways Department traffic inspector at Christchurch, is to retire. Mr Martin joined the service in 1917 and served mainly in Otago and Southland until 1938, when he was appointed stationmaster at Heathcote. He was later senior clerk at Addington, and went from there |o become traffic inspector in 1954.
