The Canterbury Women’s Club yesterday purchased a five-roomed

two-storey house on a section of 26 perches at 190 Worcester street, just east of Latimer square. The price was not disclosed. The club

has been contemplating buying its own premises for some time because of the increased membership and the expansion of its activities. The club has been in rented rooms since its foundation nearly 44 years ago. The club has a small building fund in hand and hopes to raise the rest of the purchase price among the members and by conducting functions. The club will take possession in a month’s time.

■ The Canterbury Provincial ComI mittee of the League of Mothers recently held its first meeting for the year. The president (Mrs D. G.- McFadden) presided and welcomed members from Timaru, Ashburton, and Sawyers Bay. Mrs C Noble presented the committee with a gavel, which was made by her husband from a piece of jarrah from a gatepost belonging to the Governs family. All branches reported successful meetings and that their membership was increasing. The Riccarton Garden Club held its March meeting at the home of Mrs J. Harkness. Mrs C. G Manhire presided. A talk on the cultivation of climbing plants wa« given by Mr J. W.atling. Competition results were as follows: Decorative, class A: Mrs T. Uren 1. Mrs F. Wagner 2, Mrs R. S. Kent 3. Class B: Mrs S. M. Steel 1, Mrs P. Witt 2, Mrs J. Harkness 3. Cut flowers—one fuchsia: Mrs D. Egan 1, Mrs R. S. Kent 2, Mrs H. Taylor 3. One dahlia: Mrs T. Uren 1, Mrs R. Sarjeant 2, Mrs W. L. Whittington 3. There was a large attendance at the annual meeting of the Beckenham Townswomen’s Guild. Mrs A. Thomas presided. Songs were sung by Mrs E. Hill and the accompanist was Mrs C. Richards. The competition was won by Mesdames Gillespie and Turner. Group reports were given by Mesdames J. Steinmetz. R. Allison, C. Ferguson, C. Ironside. A. Bootten and McKenzie. Prizes were won as follows: general, Mrs Heywood 1, Mrs Hart 2, Mrs Read 3; arts and crafts, Mrs Dickie 1. Mrs Steinmetz 2, Mrs Barron 3: gardening, Mrs Heywood 1. Mrs Walker and Mrs Robertson 2 equal; decorative, Mrs Heywood I. Mrs Ferguson 2. The following officers were elected: president, Mrs A. Thomson; secretary, Mrs W. Grenfell; treasurer, Mrs J. Steinmetz; committee, Mesdames Lester, McKenzie, Bootten, Allsop, C. Brown, Fleming, Grieve. Ironside, Hayes. Hamilton, Moir, Pickering, Pye and Rintoul.

Miss A. L. Smith presided at the monthly meeting of the Women’s Section of the R.S.A. garden circle. Mrs H. J. Quarrell spoke on dahlias and her observations of shows in England. An illustrated lecture on the history of wool and knitting was given by the education officer of the New Zealand Wool Board • Miss J. Young) at the March meeting of the Home Economics Association. Members stood in silence as a mark of respect to the memory of Mrs K. D. Inwood. Miss B. Batstone played two piano solos and gave two humorous sketches. Proceeds from the sales table, which was in charge of Miss Conway, were given to future street appeals. Mrs Williamson gave a demonstration on the care of the skin and hair at a meeting of the Blue Beret Club. Appreciation for the talk was expressed by Mrs Randall who gave Mrs Williamson a small gift and a spray. The following officers were elected at the annual meeting of the St. Martins Plunket Mothers’ Club: president, Mrs Wilkins: vice-presidents, Mesdames Claridge and Perryman; secretary, Mrs Hudson; treasurer, Mrs Miles; committee, Mesdames Rogers. Gracie, Barauch, Hern and Harris.

It was reported at the annual meeting of the Hornby Free Kindergarten Committee that more than £lOOO was in hand for the building. A total of £230 had been added to the fund during the year.
