SPEEDBOAT RACING

Regatta At Picton Today

Six boats will compete in the Australian and New Zealand open hydroplane championship races lor the Griffiths Cup at Picton harbour today. There will be three heats, each of 10 miles, but if one competitor wins the first two heats, the third will not be necessary. Among the more notable entries is Redhead, of Wellington, powered by a 1400 horse-power Allison aircraft engine. Susan Leigh, of Marlborough, and formerly of Auckland, has a similar engine. Both boats are capable of speeds exceeding 100 miles an hour. Flack 11, a Marlborough entrant, with a cut-down Rolls Royce aircraft motor, is capable of speeds approaching 100 miles an hour, and the only Christchurch competitor, M. Briggs, has Meteor 11, a restricted auto-hydroplane with a Mercury V 8 engine. It was built by his brother. D. Briggs. It is able to reach 80 miles an hour. The Griffiths Cup was won by Redhead in Australia several years ago, and there have been no Australian challengers for the title since then. The regatta is being held by the Marlborough Power Boat Club.
