RUSSIAN PLANS
“Cannot Stop Tests”
(Rec. 8 p.m.) MOSCOW, Mar. 18.
The Soviet Communist Leader, Mr Khrushchev, said today that the Soviet Union could not suspend nuclear tests without parallel British and American action because it would slow down her progress in atomic technology. He was replying to a suggested year’s suspension made by Mr Masaharu Hatanaka, the visiting Japanese director of a committee for African and Asian solidarity. Mr Hatanaka told reporters that he told Mr Khrushchev at an interview today that Russia should suspend tests to demonstrate her sincerity in seeking a world ban on atomic weapons. The Soviet leader said that a one-sided ban by Russia was impossible and would be interpreted as a sign of Soviet weakness, Mr Hatanaka reported.
