ROADS BOARD GRANT

Blenheim Road

Sealing

An open strip of hard-packed soil which forms part of Blenheim road south of Matipo street is to be tar-sealed and not grassed as originally proposed. An approach on behalf of complaining residents in the area by the member of Parliament for Riccarton (Mr W. A. Connelly) has resulted in a decision by the National Roads Board to meet the extra expense of sealing.

Information to this effect is contained in a letter from the chairman of the board (Mr W. S. Goosman) to Mr Connelly, but no target date for the start or completion of the work has been announced.

Since the original arrangement for grassing the strip had been made between the local authorities and the Main Highways Board developments in State housing in the area had taken place with numerous entrances for access to private garages and it had become apparent that sealing would be a much better proposition, Mr Goosman said.

“Sealing would . . . cost about £l3OO more' than the expected cost of grassing, which was £3900.

. . . After further consideration, and in the knowledge that the (Riccarton Borough) Council would have difficulty in meeting the additional cost, the board has now agreed to itself meeting the extra expense of sealing, rather than proceed with the less satisfactory grassing proposal. “On completion of the work, the residents should not have further cause for complaint,” he said.
