TRIBESMEN RIOT
African Police Stand Guard JOHANNESBURG, March 9. Police armed with Sten guns are v standing guard today in Daveytown, an African township, to prevent a renewal of the rioting in which nine Africans have been killed. Another 16 people are in hospital with serious injuries. Many others were slightly injured in street fighting between Swazi and Zhosa Africans. Police said that the trouble seemed to have stemmed from the alleged murder of a Zhosa African on March 4. Official reports said that more than 7000 Zulus living in Daveytown joined the Swazis in their battles with the Zhosas. Police in Johannesburg also are on the alert against a threat of rioting over the African’s boycott of bus services after a fare increase. Last night, about 200 Africans were involved in another riot in Johannesburg, at a beer hall, where they were told they could get no matured beer —only fresh beer. Police arrested hundreds of nonEuropeans on minor charges after Africans had flung beer mugs and other missiles at the beer hall and passing cars.
