HIT BY TRUCK ON HIGHWAY

Pedestrian Killed, Motorist Injured (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN, March 3. One man was killed and another injured in an accident on the Main South road, two chains south of the new bridge across the Taieri river, near Henley, about 1.30 p.m. today; The man killed was Frederick Pryde Sutherland, aged 54. dairy farmer, married, of Henley. The man injured is William Andrew Henderson, aged 55, carpenter, of Allanton, admitted to the Dunedin Public Hospital with head injuries. The police said it appeared the accident occurred after a small car driven north by Mr Henderson slowed down for Mr Sutherland, who was walking north along the road. A large truck, driven by Owen Arthur Berry, aged 23, of Cromwell, ran into tl.e side of the car which went off the road. The x truck carried on and struck Sutherland. The truck driver was not injured.

CAR SNAPS POLE

SWERVE TO AVOID DOG Miss M. F. Harris, of 18 Douglas street. Timaru. was admitted to the Christchurch Public Hospital with concussion after the car in which she was travelling hit a power pole on the main Christ-church-Tai Tapu highway at 2 o’clock yesterday morning. The driver of the light English model car, Mr H. Brock, of 523 Moorhouse avenue, swerved to avoid a dog near the intersection of Osterholts road and hit a concrete pole, snapping it near the base. The power lines did not come down.

Two other passengers in the car, Mr G. Telfer, of 18 Bailey place, and Miss K. M. Unwin, of the Essex Maternity Hospital, and the driver were treated at the hospital and sent home. Last evening Miss Harris’s condition was said to be satisfactory.

PLUNGE DOWN SLOPE

Truck Wrecked; Driver Escapes (New Zealand Press Association) NEW PLYMOUTH, March 3. Somersaulting once in flight, a truck carrying four tons of superphosphate plunged 200 feet down a vertical bush-covered slope on Mount Messsenger on the New Plymouth-Te Kuiti highway this morning, throwing the driver clear in its wild career. The driver, Douglas McCabe, aged 18, of 8 Chard street, New Plymouth, cannot recollect exact detail but must have been thrown through the passengers’ door and so clear of - the cab. The superphosphate was emptied out in a vast shower over the surrounding bush. It was this cloud of dust rising that warned the owner of the trilck, Mr L. B. Stonnell. agricultural contractor, of Lepperton, of the accident. He got down the slope as fast as possible and found Mr McCabe lying dazed in a patch of undergrowth. v The struck was wrecked.

CAR STRIKES CYCLIST

DRIVER FAILS TO STOP The police are anxious to trace the driver of a blue car which struck a cyclist at the intersection of Madras. High and St. Asaph streets about 12.15 a.m. on Saturday. The cyclist, Alexander Pow, of 15 Woodville street, was riding north in Madras street when he was struck by a car travelling in the opposite direction and making a right-hand turn into either High street- or St. Asaph street. The car did not stop. Mr Pow was-thrown from his bicycle and severely injured in the collision. He sustained head injuries and a suspected fracture of the spine. A motorist found Mr- Pow lying on the road and arranged for him to be taken to the Christchurch Public Hospital where his condition was reported last evening to be satisfactory. The only description of the car involved is that its colour is blue —probably a royal blue —and that it may be showing damage on its left-hand front portion. Anyone who witnessed the aedident or is able to furnish any relevant information is asked to get in touch with the Central Police Station.
