Good Sheep Sections At Rotherham Show

Though entries were smaller for the Amuri Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s annual show at Rotherham on. Saturday, it was still a notable exhibition of the district’s sheep and horses. The show, held in a picturesque setting on a ground surrounded by trees and rolling hills with higher hills in the background, was favoured by brilliantly sunny warm weather. Spectators paid a little more than £ 128 to enter the grounds—about £1 more than last year.

Mr H. G. Barton, who judged the Corriedale ewes, said it was most refreshing to come to a country show where there was such a showing of good quality and such strong competition. The standard of the ewes was excellent, and this was particularly pronounced in the case of the single ewe hoggets which were of very even quality. As was the case last year Mr D. S. Johns, immediate past president of the association, took both championship honours in the Corriedale section. His champion ewe was a two-tooth which gave every indication of showing the best qualities of the breed in maturity, said the judge. Mr A. A. Mclntosh, who reviewed the Corriedale rams, said that the champion was a fine bold type of sheep with good carriage and good bright and lustrous wool. Throughout the ram classes he found wellgrown and bold types of sheep. Good Quality

Sheep in the halfbred section were of as good quality as those he had judged two years ago, but there were not as many of them, said Mr L. G. Dollar. He gave both championship awards to C.i Burrows. The champion ram, which particularly caught his eye, was a very big, bold sheep with an excellent fleece of wool, said Mr Dollar. “Altogether a very good showing,” was how Mr A. M. Urquhart described the Merino entry. He awarded the ram championship to N. G. and R. H. Bruce for a sheep which he said could have done with a little more body, but was very evenly woolled. A oneshear ewe bred by the estate of N. Rutherford won the ewe championship for P. L. Steele. This sheep had very good conformation and was very evenly woolled —a true medium comber—and carried on well underneath, he said. In the Southdown section, among sheep which the judge said were of a very good class, J. H. Paterson gained the two championships. The top ram was a good “meaty” sheep typical of the breed and the ewe, which possessed similar qualities, was nicely woolled without having too much wool over the head. The South Suffolks were of generally high quality and would have fully held their own in a larger show, said Mr E. L. Wyles, who gave both championships to lan H. Thomson. Only limited entries were, received for the Border Leicester and English Leicester sections. Mr Robert Reid gave J. N. Boag and H. W. Farquhar the main ram and ewe honours among the Borders, and Alan K. McLaughlin exhibited both champions in the English Leicester section. Strong Competition There was strong competition among the hunters, with such outstanding performers as E. Upritchard’s Landrover, Miss M. Westenra’s Arran. Miss J. Earl’s Delight, and C. A. Burrows's Silva taking part. The championship honours went to Landrover, by a narrow margin. In the hack section there was little between the champion, Mrs B. G. Rutherford's Bingo, and Miss A. R. Smith’s Wild Night. The produce and flower shows were much smaller than last year, but there was an outstanding independent exhibition of flowers and vegetables, all grown by Mr Robert Smith, of Culverden. Entries for the show totalled 2005, not including many post entries accepted in some sections on Saturday, compared with 2704 last year. There were fewer entries in the sheep, produce, school and flower sections. Results were:— Championship Awards
