HAREWOOD AIR TERMINAL
Works Committee Discussion Criticisms of alleged extravagance in the proposed terminal building at the Christchurch international airport are reported to have begn withdrawn by some members of the City Council who attended a meeting of the works committee on Thursday evening which was addressed by the architect (Mr Paul Pascoe). It is reported that the meeting generally was convinced that the terminal should be as attractive functionally and aesthetically as it could be made. Other councillors had been invited by the chairman of the works committee (Cr. A. R. Guthrey) so that they could have more time for discussion than at a full council meeting, and the Regional Planning Officer (Miss Nancy Northcroft) was also present.
Minor points concerning the terminal were left for discussion between Mi' Pascoe and the City Engineer (Mr E. Somers). A major subject of discussion was whether the plan for the general development of the airport, prepared in outline by Mr M. B. Borgeson, should be completed by him or by local engineers and architects. The meeting is understood to have given general approval to Mr Borgeson’s proposal that a new series of service buildings and hangars should be built to the north in line with the present control tower, thus opening up the area near the present overseas terminal and aero club hangar for freight, aircraft companies, parking and other facilities. ' These proposals will be discussed with officials of the Civil Aviation Administration on March 11 and 12, and priorities will also be considered before the works committee recommends to the City Council preparation of a plan for the over-all development of the airport.
