DAMAGES FROM JET MISHAP

A New Zealand-born aircraft inspector, Raymond Colin Santos, aged 46, was awarded £5OOO damages by a jury at the Melbourne Supreme Court yesterday for injuries suffered when he was sucked into the intake of the first Australian-made Sabre jet fighter at Geelong three years ago. The jury assessed the total damages at £7500. but reduced this sum by £2500 because of contributory negligence by Santos. On the application of counsel for the Commonwealth Government and the Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation, Mr Justice Lowe withheld entering judgment until he had heard legal argument. He adjourned the case until a date to be fixed.
