LIFE SAVING J. Ryan Easily Wins National Belt Title

(From Our Own Reporter)

WELLINGTON. March i. The New Zealand lifesaving- championships held at Lyall Bay this week-end must rank as one of the most outstanding national carnivals yet held. Perfect weather with light winds and a moderate surf made the running of the meeting a certain success. The Wellington public turned out in large numbers on both days. Canterbury clubs did not repeat the successes of last year’s carnival at Oreti, except in some individual events. The exceptions were Sumner, which won the senior march past championship from South Brighton, the previous champions, and Waimairi with a runaway victory in the surf canoe event. South Brighton won the junior march past. Thirty-seven teams took part in the combined march past championship, and provided a stirring spectacle. Sumner’s win was its first in this event. An outstanding success was that of South Brighton, which had a comfortable win in the women's four-man alarm. The Taylor’s Mistake team did not perform as expected in this event. Ambition Realised J. Ryan (New Brighton) realised his ambition to win the national belt title easily from McLean (Waikanae). P. Garratt (Taylor's Mistake) did not show the form expected of him. He did better in the senior surf race, finishing third. Waikanae scooped the pool in the senior and junior surf teams’ events. The first five places in the senior surf race were filled by New Zealand team members. R. Harker (Waitemata) won narrowly from R. Haxton (Maranui), the former triple holder. B. Robertson (New Brighton) retained the junior individual surf title, but was surprisingly beaten into third place by R. Blair (South Brighton) and C. Bidwell (Sumner) in the junior belt final. Robertson finished well ahead of the rest in the inter-island junior surf teams race, won by the South Island. The first three home were South Islanders. In the junior belt final, all eight finalists were from the South Island. ' K. McLeay (Waihi), a former champion, won both the surf ski rescue title and the open surf ski race. G. Ealem (Waimairi) pushed McLead to a photo finish in the championship event. The first day was a very heavy programme. Some heats of the junior four-man alarm were held over till today because of the approaching darkness. Maranui easily won the Nelson Shield (senior six-man rescue and resuscitation) from South Elrighton, the 1956 title holders.
