A LOCKED CHURCH
Sir,—Why is St. Andrew's Presbyterian Church locked every day and all day, even on Sunday afternoon? As a visitor to Christchurch having a sentimental reason for wishing to visit this church, I have made numerous attempts, always to find the doors not only locked but with iron bars outside also securely locked. In my home town all Presbyterian churches are wide open to the public daily with a notice at the door inviting all to enter and rest, but here the church appears to be available to the public only during service hours. Does this not disclose a great lack of faith on the part of the authorities—faith in their fellow men? I have no doubt the local clergyman would willingly oblige and show me through if I rang him but who wishes to be under such an obligation?—Yours, etc., OPEN DOORS. Invercargill, January 1, 1957. [‘‘l do not comment on anonymous letters, but the ministers in office here are always very happy to arrange to show anybody through St. Andrew’s Church,” said the vicar of St. Andrew's (the Rev. R. M. Rogers) when this letter was read to him.]
