IMPROVEMENTS AT HALSWELL

Funds Sought From City Council

Funds for improvements to the Halswell Domain will be sought from money held by the Christchurch City Council under the Land Subdivision of Counties Act. This action, suggested by the Commissioner of Crown Lands (Mr T. W. Preston), was decided on by the Halswell County Council at a meeting yesterday. Advising that there was little prospect of the Lands and Survey Department giving any financial help to enlarge the pavilion at tl e domain, Mr Preston said that if the City Council was agreeable to the money for improvements being allocated, he would ask the Minister of Lands to approve the grant. > Authority was given by the council for the engineers to proceed with the sealing of about 30 chains of the Halswell Junction road from Sabys road to Gibbs entrance. The chairman (Mr J. Mackenzie) said that this portion of the road was definitely in need of sealing and the work should be put in hand as soon as possible. Waimakariri Inspection

Advice was received from the North Canterbury Catchment Board of an inspection of the Waimakariri river on February 12 to show representatives of local bodies some,of the board’s work. It was decided that four members of the council should attend the inspection. The board also advised that its chief engineer would be willing to attend any meeting held to discuss the proposals for the Halswell river and Ellesmere Land Drainage Improvement Scheme, and would explain the proposals in more detail. Eight permits for buildings valued at £11,375 were issued by the council during December, the County Clerk (Mrs R. Ballintine) reported.

Appreciation of the services of Mr J. H. Williamson, who retired from the council at the last election after serving for nine years, was expressed in a motion passed by the council.
