HOUSES FOR THE EDENS

Offers Made To Mr Holland

(New Zealand Press Association) WELLINGTON. January 16. So far five offers of private residences in “quiet and secluded” places have been made to the Prime Minister (Mr Holland) for the use of Sir Anthony Eden and Lady Eden when they arrive in New Zealand next month for a rest holiday. These residences are in the Northland, Taupo, Bay of Plenty. Wellington and Hawke’s Bay districts.

No details of a final choice will be made until the offers have been submitted to Sir Anthony Eden.

A war pensioner has offered his new 1800 sq. ft. house close to the coast, a few miles north of Wellington. The house stands on a half-acre bush-clad section.

TALLY CLERKS ON STRIKE SHIPPING HELD UP IN LONDON

(N.Z. Press Association —Copyright) LONDON, January 15.

The 16,969-ton liner Rangitata, due to sail from London on Friday with Sir Anthony and Lady Eden for New Zealand, is involved in a spreading strike of Port of London tally clerks.

There are signs that the strike may bring the Port of London to a standstill. The dockers cannot carry on unless the tally clerks check the cargo. The liners Arcadia, due to sail to Australia tomorrow, and the Orient Line’s Orion, which arrived from Australia today, are also affected by the dispute at Tilbury.

The strike began last week at Tilbury Docks, when 170 tally clerks stopped work after a new company formed for handling West African cargoes had taken on five non-registered clerks. It was called off on Friday for negotiations, but started again yesterday when these did not comply with the tally clerks’ terms. Today, about 100 tally clerks at the Royal Albert and Millwall Docks in the central London area struck in sympathy with the Tilbury clerks, who voted today reaffirming their strike decision. The Rangitata is among the ships berthed in the Royal Albert Docks.

NO SUITE ON LINER

LONDON, January 15. Sir Anthony and Lady Eden will travel in a first class double room in the Rangitata on their way to spend a month in New Zealand. As there are no suites in the ship they will have no private sitting-room. Presumably, unless special arrangements are made for them by Captain H. R. M. Smith, who joined the New Zealand Shipping Company as an apprentice at the age of 17, they will sit at his table in the dining-room and will mingle with the other passengers in the lounges. The Australian Prime Minister (Mr Menzies) has invited Sir Anthony and Lady Eden to visit Australia after their New Zealand visit, a spokesman at Australia House said today.
