Plans for a further extension of its trans-Pacific service were outlined in Wellington today by the chairman of the Orient Steam Navigation Company, Ltd., Sir Austin Anderson. “Our Pacific traffic now is three times greater than in 1954.” he said. "Instead of sending ships cruising in the Mediterranean, we are bringing them to the Pacific and giving American and Canadian travellers the chance of going round the world to Europe, by way of New Zealand and Australia.” This year’s trans-Pacific sailings were being increased by more than 50 per cent., he said. The company’s confidence in the future of Pacific sea travel was shown by the ordering of a 40,000ton liner, to be named Oriana. and to be the largest passenger vessel built in Britain since the Queen Elizabeth. The Oriana would be ready for service in 1959.
