British Officer Goes Over To Communists
(Rec. 8 p.m.) BERLIN, January 5. The East German news agency. ADN, announced today that Flying Officer Anthony Maynard Wraight, R.A.F., had been granted asylum in East Germany. The agency said that Wraight. who disappeared after flying to West Berlin on December 3. had broadcast over the East Berlin radio that he could not approve the British Government’s foreign and colonial policy. He therefore did not wish to serve in the armed forces any longer. He said he intended learning a
new profession in East Germany, the agency said.
A British Air Ministry announcement on December 21 said Wraight had been absent without leave from his unit since December 6. The announcement added: “Earlier this year, it was learnt that Wraight had been in contact with Soviet representatives in the United Kingdom. “In view of this. Wraight was on two occasions interviewed about his contacts and interests. “It Was not felt necessary to place any special restrictions on the movements of this young and inexperienced officer.”
