U.N. EXECUTIVE IN N.Z. Chief Veterinarian Of F.A.O.

One of the most travelled veterinarians in the world arrived by Tasman Airways at Whenuapai yesterday on his first visit to New Zealand. He is Sir Thomas Dalling, chief veterinarian of the Food and Agricultural Organisation of the United Nations Organisation. At present on a world tour, Sir Thomas Dalling has come to New Zealand primarily to present two papers at the meeting of the Australian and New Zealand Association for the Advancement of Science, which is being held in Dunedin from January 16 to January 23. Before coming to New Zealand he attended several meetings of F.A.O. in Asia and South-east Asia to discuss diseases of livestock in those areas.
The two papers he will present at Dunedin are entitled: “The Work of F.A.0.” and “Results of Research Work in Animal Health.” Foot and Mouth Disease Sir Thomas Dalling is secretary of the European Commission for the Control of Foot and Mouth Disease. At the moment, he said, the disease was more widespread in Europe than it usually is. “In countries like France and Italy,” he said, “it is never absent.” Sir Thomas Dalling hopes to learn “quite a bit” while in New Zealand. He will travel to Dunedin by car. accompanied by the president of the New Zealand Veterinarians’ Association (Dr. C. S. M. Hopkirk). He will leave for Johannesburg on January 25 ahd expects to be back in Rome by the end of February.
