PAHIATUA CUP
Win for Young Scholar (New Zealand Press Association) PALMERSTON N., January 6. Young Scholar scored her biggest win when she stayed on too well for the pacemaker. Honest John, to win the Pahiatua Cup at Woodville on Saturday. The winner was ridden by A. Johnson and took the lead in the last furlong, going on to win unchallenged. Appeal Court ran on fairly well from a handy position for third, and Man o’ Mars was close up in fourth place, ahead of Rexdale and China Clock.
Wanganella won the Ballance Hack Handicap decisively after having*the run of the race behind the leader all the way. Gay Jinx drew up to Wanganella in the last furlong, but never looked like heading him off. Cocoashah came on from the back for third. The winning double paid £414 Us 6d.
The day was overcast, but there was a good attendance. The totalisator handled £62,368 10s, compared with £55,920 last year, an increase of £6448 10s.
J. Toki, rider of Melmani, was suspended from riding from the conclusion of the day’s racing up to and including February 3 for causing interference in the Mangahao Handicap. Results:—
