RACING Silver King, Mundus Dead-Heat At Kurow

“The Press” Special Service

DUNEDIN, January 6. Kurow Cup honours were shared by Silver King and Mundus after they had measured strides for practically the length of the straight. This race was the feature event, and the first leg of the double, at the Kurow Jockey Club’s New Year meeting, yesterday, which brought to a close the holiday racing on the South Canterbury and North Otago circuit.

Mundus was responsible for most of the pace, and fought on well after Silver King had taken a slight advantage at the home turn. There is no photo finish on the Kurow course and the judge was unable to separate them. Silver King, which had been disappointing at Wingatui and Oamaru, was fourth favourite in a field of seven runners, and Mundus was fifth favourite. Royal Halyard, which ran Humber Hawk to a head decision in the President’s Handicap at Oamaru. was a solid favourite on both win and place and doubles machines, but he failed to show the dash which characterised his earlier races, and he could finish no closer than fifth, behind Teko and Bon Soir. Good Third

Teko ran a creditable race, to finish third, two lengths behind the winners, and Bon Soir, which was another length away, lost his chance in the early running. He was mulish at the barrier, drifted early, and along with Royal Voyage was giving the leaders 10 to 12 lengths running to the home turn. It was a lucky day for the McDonalds. Mr D. J. McDonald, the owner-trainer of Silver King, took the silver tea service, valued at £ 75, which was attached to the race, at the toss of a coin. The Ritcarton apprentice. B. W. McDonald. the rider of Mundus, won the wrist watch presented to the winning jockey by the same means. B. W. McDonald has been associated with the winners of some of the big handicaps this season, including the New Zealand and Dunedin Cups. N. T. Cowles, who is attached, to the Riccarton stable of W. Wei-' ton, was also successful on R. McDonald’s Royal Pal, in the Gillies Hack Handicap, and finished second on Count Aven, who is trained by the K’cDonald stable, in the Hakataramea Hack Handicap. Second Leg Tonka turned on a first-class performance to hold Count Aven by two lengths in the Hakataramea Hack Handicap, the second leg of the double. A half-brother, by Amber, to Massador and Roi du Bois, Tonka is trained by C. C. McCarthy at Riccarton for his breeders, Messrs N. H. Barlow and W. B. Owen, of Christchurch. The three-year-old colt, which had won his way out of maiden class at Waikouaiti, was well handled by the stable apprentice, N. Hoy. On the doubles machine. Silver King carried 3002 j 10s tickets, and Mundus carried 3496 J. in a total pool of £10,262. Holders of Silver King tickets reinvested 2531 on Tonka and this combination returned investors £33 9s for £l. Supporters of Mundus reinvested 387 tickets on Tonka and this double paid £2l 18s for £l. The weather was fine and the track, which carried a good sole of grass, was fast. The totalisator was down on the earlier races on-course, but made a good recovery to show an increase of £1045 10s on last year’s figures. The total for the day was £21.880, including £1968 on the double, compared with £20.834 10s last year. Cup Running

Bon Soir received the worst of the start of the Kurow Cup and Fulgent was the first to show out. At the end of two furlongs Mundus had taken charge from Teko, Fulgent and Royal Halyard with two lengths to Silver King and a gap to Bon Soir and Royal Voyage. which had tailed off early. Running to the six furlongs, Mundus was just ahead of Silver King, Teko, and Royal Halyard, with two lengths to Fulgent, and eight lengths to Bon Soir and Royal Voyage. Silver King shaded Mundus at the home turn, but the Newtown Pippin gelding was level with the top-weight at the furlong and gained a slight advantage 100 yards from the post. Silver King came again and they were locked together when they passed the post. Teko was two lengths away third, with a length to the fast finishing Bon Soir. There was a gap to the favourite. Royal Halyard, and Royal Voyage just passed Fulgent at the post. Easy Win

Tonka, winner of the maiden event at Waikouaiti. advanced his record a stage further when he scored decisively in the Hakataramea Hack Handicap. The Amber colt was in third place most of the way, took the lead running to the furlong, and held his advantage from the fast finishing Count Aven. Renway, Kotiti and Tonka were the first out. with two lengths to Deliar, and length intervals to Count Aven, De Bracey and Kansas. Renway and Kotiti led into the straight but Tonka took charge soon after and won well by two lengths. Count Aven finished solidly for second place, a length clear of Deliar, which got up to take the third placing by a head from Kotiti. Kansas, which, with Count Aven and De Bracey, was last away, was next, ahead of De Bracey, with Renway weakening to last. Results:— J. J.
