ATHLETICS T. CROSSEN IMPROVES FOR 660 YARDS WIN

A much-Improved middle-distance runner. T. Crossen (University), showed further progress when he led throughout the senior A grade 660 yards to return lmin 23.3 sec in the first inter-club athletic meeting for 1957 at Rugby Park on Saturday. The time, although not sensational, was a good one. but the significant part of the performance was the manner in which it was achieved. Previously when racing at distances beyond a quarter-mile. Crossen s stride has frequently broken down, but there was no suggestion that this was likely to happen at any stage of Saturday’s race. Crossen ran with a confidence that Canterbury’s other middle-distance runners could well attempt to emulate. Taking the lead from the start he applied pressure throughout the race, giving none of his opponents a chance to challenge him. Although he was tiring coming round to the finishing straight, he managed to maintain a powerful striding rhythm for a fair pace.

The junior three-quarter mile was a thrilling duel between D Reece (Olympic) and G. F. Hack (Technical!. with Reece winning by a foot in the surprisingly good time of 3 min U.4sec. a shade faster than J Kyle (Manat) recorded for the senior race.

Reece took oyer the lead after the first lap. and just managed to hold off a strong challenge from Hack over the last 130 yards. Both made remarkable runs, for Hack has concentrated mainly on quarter and half miles, and Reece, who has a good record as a cross-country runner had not previously shown such outstanding ability on the track. There seems little doubt that Reece is benefiting from the experience of his elder brother. C. the Canterbury senior six-mile champion and record holder. Senior Six Miles J. K. Macdonald (University) had a run-away win in the senior six miles from Reece. At one stage it •eemed probable that Macdonald set a new Canterbury record. of J? ,nnin S on his own in such hot conditions proved too much for him. however, and his speed flagged over the latter stages. His time of 30mm 30.8 sec was nearly 45sec outside Reece’s record. Although he was the only 'comoepadderton (High SchJEl) aged 14, showed promising ability in the junior 5000 metre road walk covering the distance in 36min 30 only 4mm 28sec slower than his brother, D. Chadderton. recorded for the senior race.

In her first race since returning from watching the Olympic Games MISS M. Chamberlain (Technical) had no trouble in striding away froi P tl 2 e field in the women’s 330 yards A grade, which she won in *2sec. Miss Chamberlain has a stvle we * l suited to the middle distances and she may later in the year tackle the 880 yards also. If she does there should be a most inter- '?“ h Miss F - Mcßeath (Toe H), who has twice broken the Canterbury record this season, and Miss R. Hames (Technical), the former record holder.
