SEVERAL FIRES AT WEEK-END WALLS OF BEDROOM DAMAGED
Most serious of the several fires in Christchurch at the week-end was one which damaged a bedroom and its contents at a house at 117 Main South road on Saturday. Two engines from the Central Fire Station and one from Sockburn answered the call at 12.10 p.m. and saved the house from more extensive damage.
The house is occupied by Mr R R. McSeveney. The fire broke out in the bedroom and severely damaged the inner walls. Hot weather possibly contributed to grass fires at the weekend. The first was at 1.32 p.m. on Saturday, when one machine from the central station and one from Sydenham went to an empty section next to 321 Port Hills road There was no damage to the adjoining section. The next grass fire, at 3.28 p.m.. was a roadside one on Christchurch City Council property in Centaurus road. No damage was caused before the fire was put out by units from the Sydenham and central brigades. At 6.23 p.m., units from the same stations went to another grass fire at 1 Ensors road. The fire was by the roadside on property occupied by Mr F. Tempero There was no damage.
About one chain of hedge was destroyed on an empty section opposite 987 Ferry road when a fire broke out there shortly after 9.30 p.m. The property is owned by Ballin Brothers. Ltd. Units from central and Woolston attended. The last fire on Saturday was at a house at 455 Madras street, occupied by Mr G. Lee. Slight damage was caused to the floor of a porch and a door before the fire was extinguished by units from St. Albans and central. The first call yesterday was again to a grass fire. At 9.45 a.m. two units from the Central Fire Station put out an outbreak at an empty section at 124 Durham street before it caused any damage.
