U.S. SUPPLY OF NEWSPRINT

Prediction Made Of Surplus (N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 8 p.m.) WASHINGTON, Jan. 4. The United States Government predicted in a report made public today that United States publishers would have a surplus of newsprint this year, in spite of continued record consumption. The Forest Products Division of the Commerce Department, in a special report made public by a House of Representatives Commerce Sub-Committee, said that the tight newsprint-demand situation had eased since mid-year, even although consumption was at record-breaking rates. The report, dated December 20, predicted there would be 7,125,000 tons of newsprint available to publishers this year. They were expected to use about 7,000.000 tons.

It reported that U.S. production of newsprint would reach a record this year of 1,850,000 tons, exceeding the previous record in 1926 by 160,000 tons. Supplies of newsprint from Canada this year were expected to increase slightly, to 5,300,000 tons.
