RACING BON SOIR FIT FOR KUROW CUP

Bon Soir has good form credentials for his attempt to win his second Knrow Cup on Saturday. He has already raced three times on the holiday circuit, and there was merit in his close third to Flair and Writer in the Dunedin Jockey Club Handicap at Wingatui last week. Bon Soir was some distance from the winner in fourth place in the Waikouaiti Cup on Tuesday, but made up ground when others were feeling the strain of the chase after Royal Warrant. Mr M. C. Watson’s six-year-old usually takes time to warm to his work, and several of his best; performances have been marked I by good runs from near the tail of the field. But he was pacemaker! in the high-weight at Hororata on I December 8, when he was worn' down very close to the finish by Relinquish and Demand. In Relinquish’s case, that was a winning race trial for the Dunedin Cup, so Bon Soir’s close third was a creditable placing. * Bon Soir has 7-9, and is 191 b below the top weight Silver King. Below Form The holiday form of Silver King was not good. He is now eight, but only as recently as; October he was racing with dis-j < tinction against New Zealand's! best milers at Trentham. Silver King's class is well-estab-lished. It only remains to be seen whether he will gallop more generously than he has done lately. The result of the race could hinge on that. Fulgent was runner-up in weak sprint fields at Oamaru and Waikouaiti earlier this week. He appeared unlucky to go under to Copperfield at Waikouaiti, where he galloped more generously on the holding track than he has done on firm ground earlier. Kurow usually provides a hard track, which would not brighten Fulgent’s chance. But if there is any easing in the going the Red Mars gelding will be one of the best in this field. Royal Voyage, a close second to Bon Soir in this race last year, does not appear any better equipped now to improve his Kurow Cup record. He is now eight, and his latest performances have not created much enthusiasm. Ready to Win Orari will be more stronglyrepresented. probably, by Royal Halyard. This three-year-old Peak Halyard colt has struck a solid form patch. He gained a wellearned win in the high-weight on the second day of the South Canterbury meeting, and two days later finished boldly to run Humber Hawk to a head over a mile and a quarter at Oamaru. Teko has done most of his racing as a sprinter. He improved a serviceable record by beating Fulgent and Motuc-ka over six furlongs at Oamaru last Monday. He did not show the same dash in finishing fourth at Waikouaiti a day later, but track conditions after morning rain were altogether different. Teko has a powerful run at the end of seven furlongs, and has beaten a number of well-per-formed gallopers on the small courses. A test at a middle distance might not be too burdensome for him. Mundus was a fast-finishing third to Column and Shoal, at Washdyke, and a weakening third behind Humber Hawk and Royal Halyard at Oamaru. He strengthens the possibility of a win for a light-weight; his best form has been of a good standard, although success has been elusive. Form Field Five winners at earlier holiday meetings are engaged in the Hakataramea Hack Handicap, the second leg of the double. The field is of good size, the distance is only six furlongs, and a very close finish would not be wondered at Appreciate and Barbara’s Treasure, both winners at Washdyke, have other engagements on the Kurow programme. Appreciate’s stablemate, Red Elf, has no other engagement, and will have to be reckoned with for the second leg after a smart win against the hack sprinters on the first day of the South Canterbury 1 meeting. Red Elf finished sixth, inches from the third horse, in the Smithfield Hack Handicap, won by Appreci - te, on the second day at Washdyke. Renway, the closest to Appreciate in the weights, made an encouraging fresh start for the season with a third to Field Dress and Water Boy at Oamaru on Monday. He was four and a half lengths from the winner at the end of a fast-run race, but improved a few places to fill that i position.

Renway should have every chance if he begins well from No.

Likes Hard Tracks Count Aven recaptured his best form with a stylish win over seven furlongs at Oamaru. He could not reach a place at Waikouaiti, but it was obvious that he was not at ease on the soft track. Count Aven is a powerful finisher, and if he is reasonablv well placed starting the last furlong few should beat him. Keel, a close third to Appreciate and Equipage at Washdyke.
