ROAD-SAFETY CAMPAIGN
PLANS FOR THIS YEAR (From Our Own Reporter) WELLINGTON, Jan. 3. Details of the assault to be made by the Transport Department on dangerous driving in 1957 were given tonight by the Minister of Transport (Mr W. S. Goosman). But he added this warning: “I cannot emphasise too strongly the growing dangers associated with increasing volumes of traffic. The only real counter to the§e dangers is for everyone to be much more careful on the roads.” The principal features to be developed in this year’s campaign are: (1) The application of findings of the guinea-pig highway experiment. (2) Enforcement of the new consolidated traffic regulations which will come into force on March 1. (3) Publication of a now road code pamphlet based on simplicity and ease of reading. (4) Further development of special district road safety campaigns to concentrate forces and efforts where accidents are most frequent. (5) Creation of additional local road safety committees on the principle that the closer the administration is to the people concerned the sounder and more effective the administration will be. (6) Further concentration of patrols at week-ends, and further development of flying squads. (7) Intensification of the campaign against drunken driving. (8) Overhaul of drivers’ regulations and re-examination of standards of fitness for drivers licences. (9) Adoption of an experimental road safety town on the same principle as the guinea-pig highway. (10) Encouragement of motorcycle training schools. (11) Installation of compulsory stops under the traffic regulations at railway level crossings where warranted by. the volume of traffic.
