DEFENCE

Sir,—Having read the letter condemning the defence preparations of New Zealand. I was gratified to realise that the writer’s views are those of the minority. This is borne out, of course, by the fact that some years ago the people of New Zealand voted, by a majority, for the compulsory military graining scheme. Perhaps your correspondent would prefer to close his eyes to the movement of current affairs, cross his fingers, and hope that war, with all its horrors, will not come our way again? “Every teacher should realise that an educated person never joins the Army.” Does the correspondent, then, picture the modern Army as a form of cannon fodder? To the contrary, the present-day Army is a complex, disciplined, trained and efficient body of men and machines, existing as a powerful factor for peace. As an educated regular soldier, I am proud to wear the Queen’s uniform.— Yours, etc., CORPORAL. January 3, 1957.
