SPORTS CONTEST AT WAIMATE

FAMOUS ATHLETES COMPETE Although he gave away almost Impossible starts, Reg Harris, four times world professional champion, staged impressive performances in the cycling handicaps at the Waimate Caledonian Society’s eightyfirst annual fixture. He contested the final of the series of match races with the South Australian rider. Conn Shaw, to win in a close finish in 12.8 sec, but although he showed flashes of amazing speed, his lack of real fitness and heavy handicap kept him from a placing in other finals on the programme Shaw also gave an attractive display, but he, too, was too heavily penalised by his handicaps. Features of the meeting were the appearances of Olympic representatives. Neville Scott won the threemile handicap, running in effortless style to cover the distance in 14min 33sec. Valerie Sloper gave a good performance in the shot put with a throw of 45ft lOin. M. Richards cleared 13ft 9in in a pole vault—only half an inch below his New Zealand record.
