SCRUB-FIRE DAMAGE

(Rec. 11 p.m.) MALIBU (California), Dec. 27.

Forecasts of strong, gusty winds today made dismal news for an army of men battling a scrub fire which has ravaged scenic territory between the Pacific Ocean and the Santa Monica Mountains. One man died in the fire which broke out early yesterday in an area tinder-dry from months without rain. It spread with frightening speed. Early today the fire had covered approximately 19,000 acres of beachfront and hillside sloping toward the sea. The burned section is at least eight miles long and extends five miles back from the ocean into the mountains. The stricken area, dotted with expensive homes, beach cottages, large and small trailers, and farms, is 35 miles north-west of Los Angeles. The Los Angeles County Fire Chief estimated that at least 27 homes have been destroyed. Many small outbuildings also were consumed. Frightened deer, rabbits, and coyotes fled from the mountains and many perished. Scores of residents have horses and dogs and the fire reports gave accounts of householders risking their safety to get pets out of danger.
