FIRE DAMAGES FLAX MILL
STRIPPING ROOM DESTROYED (New Zealand Press Association) DUNEDIN. December 26. Several thousands of pounds’ damage was caused by a fire which swept through the stripping room at the Otanomomo flax mill, near Balclutha, today. Production at the mill will be temporarily stopped by the destruction of a stripping machine, several electric motors, and a water pump. It was the fourth fire at the m 11 in the last six years. The cause is not known. The Balclutha Fire Brigade was called from six miles away, but when it arrived the stripping room was burnt out. Twenty farmers helped the brigade to fight the fire and stop it from spreading. Several vehicles were saved from the building. The mill is owned by W. Templeton and Sons. The fire was first noticed by a workman.
