TWO DROWNED IN RIVER
Victims Father And Son (New Zealand. Press Association) DUNEDIN, December 26. A father and son were drowned at Taieri Beach this afternoon, the son in an attempt to save his; father. They were: Albert Edward Smith, aged 35. of 9 Burgess street. Dunedin, a: storeman; and Keith Norman Smith, aged 12. Mr Smith and his son were play- ! ing with a ball on the bank of the ! Taieri river -hen the ball went into the water. Mr Smith, who , could not swim, waded out to retrieve it, and went out of his depth. He called for help, but bystanders thought he was only playing. Mr John Donaldson went to assist him, and Mr Smith's son followed him. Mr Donaldson had to give up the attempt at rescue when the current began to carry I him downstream. ! The boy and his father floated (downstream. The boy’s body was [picked up by a launch near the opposite bank. A two-hour search ' was made for Mr Smith, but no trace was found. i Mr Smith was employed in the ! main store at Taieri aerodrome. :He arrived in New Zealand two [years ago with his family from England.
INJURED WOMAN DIES
