Forty-seven Syrians, including the former dictator, Adib Shiskakly, four former Cabinet Ministers, and eight members of Parliament, are to be courtmartialled on charges of armed revolution and plotting with British and Iraqi forces to overthrow the regime in Syria.
This was announced by Major Youssef Shakra, a military judge, according to the British United Press. The Associated Press correspondent said that the announcement followed by only a few hours an official report that the Syrian Cabinet of Mr Sabri Assali had resigned. Mr Assali announced on December 17 that, he was going to form a new Cabinet, “more active and harmonious’’ than the outgoing one, the Associated Press correspondent said. According to the British United Press the plot against the Syrian regime was revealed when the Syrian military authorities captured two jeeps loaded with British arms being taken over the Syrian border from Iraq. Major Shakra’s announcement said that the conspiracy was aimed at overthrowing the present Syrian regime and setting up a new proIraqi government. Eighteen of the 47 alleged conspirators fled to the Lebanon according to the United Press correspondent.
