CURRENT NOTES

Miss Gwen Gilbert, of Auckland, has been awarded the I. M. Jamieson Scholarship, valued at £4OO, for postgraduate study overseas, it was announced yesterday in Christchurch by the New Zealand Free Kindergarten Union. Miss Gilbert is a director of the Ponsonby Free Kindergarten, and is president of the Auckland branch of the Kindergaretn Teachers’ Association. She intends to further her studies at the Institute of in London.

Mr and Mrs Gerald H. Bridge and their son and daughter, of Melbourne, have arrived in Christchurch to spend Christmas and New Year with Mr Bridge’s parents. Mr and Mrs Arthur H. Bridge, of Fendalton.

Miss I. F. Milne, first assistant mistress at the Christchurch Girls’ High School, who retired at the end of the school year, was the guest at a function held recently by the women’s committee of the Parent-Teacher Association. Miss Milne was presented with a marcasite brooch by Mrs D. Clephane. Patients and staff of the Upper and Middle Sanatoria were recently entertained by the Wanderers’ Concert Party. The organiser was Mr Ted Regan. Items were given by Lillian Charlton, Gwen Saunders, Norman t Wheeler, Dave Nutira, Stan Deans, and ® the Regal Hawaiians (songs), Ces Greenaway, Graham Cooke (novelty), Clarrie Day (ventriloquist), John Harris and daughter (clowns). The annual Christmas party of the United Ladies’ Bowling Club was held recently, when the president (Mrs E B. Rhodes) presided. Guests included the president (Mr R. Grant) and members of the men’s club and representatives of the United Tennis Club and the United Croquet Club. The pavilion restaurant was specially decorated for the occasion. After the singing of carols presentations were made to Mrs Haybyrne, a member of the interclub organisation for 10 years, who recently recovered from a long illness, and to Mrs Smith, the club’s caterer. Competitions were won by Messrs F. A. Wagner, R. Leslie, J. J Staples, and J. Campbell. Members of the Christchurch branch of the Air Force Association held a picture party at the Regent Theatre to see the film “Reach for the Sky.” they held a supper party at the theatre. Decorations, arranged by members of the association, featured model aircraft and - R.N.Z.A.F. flags. Guests of honour included the Mayor (Mr R. M. Macfarlane, M.P.) and Mrs Macfarlane; the Town Clerk (Mr H. S. Feast) and Mrs Feast; the Commanding Officer, R.N.Z.A.F. Station, Wigram (Group Captain F. R. Dix) and Mrs Dix; Colonel H. Crosswell, of the U.S.A.F.; the president of the Christchurch branch of the New Zealand Air League (Mr J. R. Maling) and Mrs Maling: and the president of the Brevet Club (Mr W. E. F. Adams) and Mrs Adams. The Nativity story was presented in tableau form by the girls at the Burwood Training Centre to an adult audience on Saturday evening and to an audience of elderly people and children yesterday afternoon. The choir entered the hall carrying lighted candles and left the hall in procession at the conclusion of the presentation. The girls were trained by the principal (Miss K. J. Scotter) and the choir was conducted by Mr A. Filer.
