CHRISTMAS LAMB AND POULTRY
Increased Stocks In Shops Today
Although bakers in Christchurch did not bake very much more bread last night in preparation for the Christmas holidays on Tuesday and Wednesday than they would for a normal week-end, butchers and delicatessens will be extremely busy today selling greatly increased stocks of meat and poultry. Anticipating that many persons would have left the city for their holidays since Friday one bakery has baked 2000 fewer loaves than it did on Friday for the same period. For a normal week-end during the year the firm bakes 20,000 loaves, but last night only about 18.000 loaves left the oven
A poultry distributing firm, however. had delivered between 4000 and 5000 head of poultry to shoos in Christchurch for sale today. For a normal week-end during the year the firm delivers about 460 or 500 head of poultry for sale on a Friday. Usually the firm distributes between 1200 and 1400 fowls to Christchurch shops every week, but in the last week sales have risen to between 12,000 and 15,000.
Butchers throughout the city have stocked their shops well with lamb to «be sold today but, probably because of the large number of refrigerators in private homes now. many persons have bought their meat well in advance this year.
