MESSAGE FROM MODERATOR
(New Zeaiana Press Association) DUNEDIN, December 23. In a Christmas message, the Rt. Rev. John M M'Kenzie, Moderator of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand, says:— ‘‘At first sight, it might seem that the traditional messages of joy and peace and goodwill associated with this season are rather sadly out of tune with what is happening in the world. “But we need to remember that the very world into which Christ came was also a world of tension and division, of oppression and cruelty, and of fear and distress for very many. The situation of Palestine then was not very far removed from that of Hungary today. “Yet the difference that Christ’s coming has made is that, though these terrible things are still happening today, yet the conscience of the world is aroused, and love and compassion for the sufferer is seeking to express itself in every possible way. “Such circumstances in our time should be a call to forgo any extravagant and selfish exoenditure and indulgence. Surely this is a time, when if we put Christ back into Christmas, there should be a return to simplicity. Let us recall and try to follow in spirit the humble, simply joy in God’s revelation and nearness of those who worshipped at the manger. “Let us also remember that this should be, above all things, a family festival, as it was at the first, with a special place and thought for the stranger and those far from home. When this is more 'ully restored, we may be more readv to live and join hands as a family of nations. “Finally, dark though the shadows be that lie across the world, let us still lift up our hearts in hone. Christmas is an eternal reminder of our dependence on the providence and purpose of Almighty God.”
