MANAWATU CLUB

SALHJA WINS CUP FITZHERBERT HANDICAP TO FAEROE BANK (New Zealand Press Association) PALMERSTON NORTH, December 23. In a true run race the Awapumtrained Salhia stayed on to win the Manawatu Cup on Saturday in decisive fashion. She was never further back than fifth and ran clear turning for home. From that noimUshe never looked like losing. Pine Gggßfeittled on gamely into second Stylish Milling made up ground middle for third ahead of an< L Portugal. The winner was capably handled by A. C. Messervy. The outsider. Faeroe Bank, finished stoutly in the straight to win the Fitzherbert Handicap in a photo finish with Bugle Boy, also at good odds. The favourite. King of Joy, was a fair third, just ahead of Lucky Beau, Musketeer and Battle Fort. A feature of the day’s racing was the success of the jockey. J. W. Harris. Besides riding Auroras Pride to victory in the non-totalisator race he also won on Bridie, Regalu Dignitary and Can-Can, making four wins in all. The doubles combination of Salhia and Faeroe Bank paid £4OB 2s 6d for £l. The weather was fine and the track was very fast. There was a good attendance and the totalisator handled £108,697 as against £115,987 10s last year, a decrease of £7290 10s. Following the running of the first division of the non-totalisator race, W. L. Aitken, rider of Gold Legend, and J. W. Harris, rider of Aurora’s Pride, were questioned into crowding that occurred when the horses were passing the false rail. Aitken said that Gold Legend and Pleasant Fancy (B. J. Clements) had been racing almost together. Pleasant Fancy went slightly ahead and when Gold Legend moved out a trifle he just touched Pleasant Fancy’s heels. Pan Jet (F. Henry) was checked after going about two furlongs. Henry said that he attempted to go into a gap in the leadirig bunch and Pan Jet touched the heels of Lady VI, who was in front of him, and who was pulling hard. The saddle on Aer Lingus slipped forward in the early part of the running of the Manawatu Cup Handicap and she was pulled up. When her rider attempted to steady Aer Lingus there was slight crowding and Glendower was checked. Amber Ring (S. Anderson) was very sore and tailed off right from the start of the Manawatu Cup. Following the running of the Eulogy Stakes, W. L. Aitken, rider of Juventas, A. D. George, rider of Omanett, and D. D. Gough, rider of Star Slipper, were questioned about crowding that occurred after the horses passed the false rail. Juventas and Omanett were both checked at this stage, particularly Omanett. The statements of the riders indicated that there was not enough room when Star Slipper moved in slightly. Gough was advised that he must use the utmost care when looking for a run at the false rail.

V. J. Sellars was questioned into the running of Pinnacle Ridge, which finished last in the Fitzherbert Handicap. Sellars said that he thought that Pinnacle Ridge had struck herself after going two furlongs and after that she failed to hit out freely. Pinnacle Ridge raced in bandages and showed no sign of soreness when she returned to the birdcage.

J. W. Harris, the rider of King of Joy, and K. J. Grylls, the rider of Stanford Hope in the Fitzherbert Handicap, were asked why their horses were checked just before the turn into the straight. The explanation was that Musketeer (A. T. Jones) fell back slightly at that point and that the horses had nowhere to go in the very closely bunched field. A. C. Messervy, rider of Noumea, was questioned about this horse’s running in the straight. Messervy said that Noumea ran in suddenly when hit with the whip and he considered that the horse, which had been under pressure throughout the race, was tiring and he therefore did not use the whip any further. When Noumea ran in it caused a check to Gold Pin, which was attempting to improve its position on the inside of Noumea. Routine swabs were taken from Coral’s Son (Tokomaru High-weight) and CanCan (Gilles Handicap). Results:— TOKOMARU HIGH-WEIGHT, of £450: one mile and three furlongs.—4, 5 CORAL’S SON (1) 10-0 W.
