Relinquish Beats Loyal Chief In Dunedin Cup

(From Out Own Reporter)

DUNEDIN, December 23. Relinquish carried the colours of Mr J. F. Thwaites, president of the Hororata Racing Club, to a decisive win in the Dunedin Cup at Wingatui on Saturday. He led for the last five furlongs and won by two and a half lengths from the favourite. Loyal Chief. The Invercargill-trained Flair was third, three-quarters of a length back. Relinquish gave Riccarton its twelfth Dunedin Cup success in the last 14 years. The six-year-old Finis — Bewitching gelding is trained by G. S Barr, and was ridden by the 18-year-old Riccarton apprentice, B. W. McDonald, who won the New Zealand Cup on Jimmy Flash last month. A fortnight ago. Relinquish won the high-weight at Hororata. His performance did not stamp him as a likely Dunedin Cup winner, but there was no fluke about his win. His time for the mile and a half, 2min 30sec. equalled the track record set by Signal Officer, and is a race record. The pace was strong from the start. The first mile was run in Imin 40sec and even that far out many were feeling the strain. The horses at and near the top of the handicap, apart from Writer, failed badly.

Writer, last year’s winner, was bumped on to the rails near the halfmile when another runner changed his ground. He lost some skin in this incident, but he showed characteristic gameness to run past several horses into fourth place. With better luck he could have won the race for the second year. Kasr-el-Nil rounded off a record double for the course when he outclassed the others in the second leg. the Publicans’ Handicap. The race was run in rain which had set in about an hour earlier, and the easing in the track was much to the liking of this Invercargill sprinter, which won by four lengths. There were only 30 10s tickets on the Relinquish-Kasr-el-Nil combination, which paid £1536 9s for £l. The Champagne Stakes was soundly won by Bow Tie, a bay colt by Beaumaris from Lady Paigle, owned by Mr A. Duthie, of Herbert, and trained at Wingatui by J. W. Pankhurst. Bow Tie was ridden by the trainer’s grandson, R. J. Mackie, who had this smart galloper in a trailing position to the straight, where Her Ex and The Mint were in front. Bow Tie kept up a strong run and had the race won at the half-furlong. The on-course totalisator turnover was £46.530 10s, including £5155 on the double, compared with £68,037 10s on the first day last year, a decrease of £21,507. Cap Running Relinquish led for the last five furlongs of the Dunedin Cup, and won unchallenged by two lengths and a half from the heavily backed light-weight. Loyal Chief. Flair was third, three-quarters of a length back, and was clear of the others led in by Writer. The pace was strong from the start, and at the end of the first half-mile, run in 49 4-ssec. Cashmere was in the lead, and was being joined by Suphero. There, Lucky Bill. Cheerio and Relinquish were in line behind the leaders, clear of Loyal Chief and Flair, then Field Chief. Exodus. Spring Night. Royal Warrant. Canon. Silver King, Humber Hawk. Writer. Obelisk. Watch and Wait, Dinner Chat. Bon Soir. Horatius, Overboard and Landon. Humber Hawk’s rider, M. D. Alexander, had lost his irons inside the first half-mile. The field was stringing out, and there was no apparent slackening in the pace. B. W. McDonald took Relinquish through to the lead at the five furlongs. With the first mile covered in Imin 46sec. many were feeling the strain, but Relinquish went ahead strongly by two lengths from Loyal Chief. Suphero. Flair and Cashmere were following, then in a gap Spring Night. Field Chief. Lucky Bill, Exodus, Silver King. Royal Warrant, Humber Hawk, and Writer, which was having trouble finding racing room. Relinquish was still two lengths clear on the home turn, and Loyal Chief and Flair could not get any closer. The Riccarton trained Finis gelding ran the last furlong very strongly, and Loyal Chief gamely stalled off Flair for second. Writer kept up a strong gallop on the inner for fourth. The luck of the tuning had been all against him. The 10-year-old Exolus was a neck back fifth, then there was a head to Obelisk, a strong finisher. Lucky Bill was next, two lengths back, and was followed in by Bon Soir. Royal Warrant. Canon. Overboard. Cheerio, Spring Night. Watch and Wait. Suphero. Field Chief, Dinner Chat, Cashmere, Silver King. Humber Hawk. Horatius. and Landon. The last half-mile was run in 50sec.

Kasr el Nil's Easy Win Kasr el Nil made one-act of the Publicans' Handicap, second leg of the double, by leading all the way and winning by four lengths. He galloped with great dash on the soft track and had the race in hand on the home turn. Red Admiral led a vain chase after Kasr el Nil to the furlong, but he was pegged back into fourth place by Desert Cloud and Nairn Bridge. Kasr el Nil led to the half-mile from Rise and Shine, Desert Cloud. Copperfield. Red Boa. Brooke. Skylight, and Irish Wings. Three furlongs out Kasr el Nil was clear by two lengths, and Rise and Shine as well as several of the others were making little headway. Red Admiral was a clear second after Straightening up. Desert Cloud found a gap on the inner, and Nairn Bridge moved forward on the outer, but they held the interest only of their place backers. Red Admiral beat Skylight by three-quarters of a length for fourth. Skylight had his chance, so did Copperfield (sixth). Motueka made up ground for seventh ahead of Irish Wings. Rathkeale. Princess Nentune, Royal Display, Silence. Rise and Shine. Tamrin, Palace. Perfect Peach, Brooke, Red Tinge, and Mv Friend. , Tamrin. My Friend and Royal Display gave ground at the start. Results:— Champagne Stakes Bow Tie kept up a solid challenge from a trailing position to win the Champagne Stakes decisively from The Mint and Her Ex. which led into the last furlong. Her Ex was clear in a few strides at the start, and The Mint joined her going to the half-mile where Kelp was moving forward. Bow Tie was running close behind his stablemate Surapt, and clear of Barana. Her Ex and The Mint turned for home on terms, with Kelp and Bow Tie trailing. Kelp was beaten soon after, but Bow Tie closed steadily on The Mint and Her Ex and had the race in hand at the half-furlong. At the end he had the comfortable margin of a length. The Mint beat Her Ex by a nead for second. then there was a gap of three lengths to Surapt. a length to Black Star, and a gap to Kelp, Moon El Nil, Barana and Sea Buoy.
