GOOD WISHES TO EXPEDITION
Sir Edmund Hillary’s Thanks (By a Special Correspondent) ABOARD H.M.N.Z.S. ENDEAVOUR, Dec. 23. Scores of messages of goodwill have reached the Endeavour since she sailed from Bluff on Friday night. Sir Edmund Hillary, on behalf of Captain H. Kirkwood and himself, expressed appreciation of the good wishes. “We only hope,” he said, “that we can live up to the high expectations you all have of us.” Among the messages were greetings from Mr George Lowe, now in South Georgia with the British section of the Trans-Antarctic Expedition, and from Dr. Vivian Fuchs, leader of that expedition.
From Halley Bay, on the Weddell Sea, came Christmas greetings from the 10 men who have wintered there, preparing a base for the international geophysical year.
Viscount Bledisloe, a former Gover-nor-General of New Zealand, has sent a message wishing the New Zealand expedition well. Other messages have come from private citizens, scientific bodies, and New Zealand Junior Chambers of Commerce.
