The omission of Lankford Smith from the Otago Plunket Shield team for its first match this season brings to an end a remarkable record of successive appearances for the province. With the last shield match last season, Smith equalled the record of I. B. Cromb of 39 shield appearances on end. In his 59 firstclass matches, Smith scored 2272 runs at an average of 25.24 and took 78 wickets for 39 runs each. He was noted for his athletic fielding, even in recent seasons. Smith is now 42 years old.
