Grandmother Disarms Masked Gunman
(N.Z. Press Association—Copyright) (Rec. 11 p.m.) MELBOURNE, December 20.
A grandmother disarmed a masked gunman in her home at Moonee Ponds, a Melbourne suburb, early today.
The gunman smashed a loaded piece of hose across her face as she pushed him into the street. He ran away, leaving behind the hose, a loaded sawn-off rifle and several lengths of light chain and padlocks. The woman, Mrs Margaret Frances Howell, aged 59, is the wife of a bank manager and a grandmother of five. She said the man had been found in the laundry by her daughter. He forced the daughter into the kitchen. “My daughter screamed and I pulled the gun out of his hand,” she said. “Then I pushed him through the kitchen door. He ran out the back gate and disappeared. I didn’t have time to get frightened. It all happened so quickly,” she said.
