ENJOY YOUR CHRISTMAS TOUR. ELIMINATE UNNECESSARY HAZARDS. alan j. McGillivray Car Exchange and Sales Service, 98 Oxford Tee., ’Phone 62-309. WISHES YOU THE COMPLIMENTS OF THE SEASON. To help you enjoy your holiday the following suggestions may prove worthy of notice: You will be wise to remember that when on a motoring tour there are many hazards entirely beyond your control which can spoil your whole holiday. These are the dark moments that have to be borne with fortitude. However, there are many probable hazards which, if thoroughly investigated prior to departure, can prevent unnecessary hold-ups, recriminations, and discomfort. Check your car beforehand and make a detailed survey of all parts that could cause delay. This will eliminate many hazards and reduce the chance of a break-down to a minimum. Follow this list carefully and see if your car is ready for the road: Brakes and Steering.—lnspect all steering knuckle and ball joints for excessive play. Brakes must operate evenly and efficiently. All linkages must be free of corrosion and bolts must be tight on mechanical brakes. Inspect all pipelines for leaks in hydraulic systems. . Shackles, Springs, Independent Suspension, and Shock Absorbers.—A broken spring cap or badly worn shackle pin can cabse inconvenience and delay. Coil springs must be functioning, together with shock absorbers. Inefficient shock absorbers can cause broken springs and much discomfort for the driver and passengers alike. Check tyres for small cracks that may develop into real fractures with continuous and sustained hours of driving on rough country roads. Make sure tubes are not semi-perished and likely to blow out with unusual stress and strain. Electrical systems and equipment must be tested carefully. Generator must* be charging, ignition wires clean and free from oil, distributor points in good condition, headlamps and lens, windscreen wipers and motor, battery terminals, all can be checked, as failure of any item can cause a breakdown. Inspect door catches and luggage boot locks and hinges, also window winders. These may appear unimportant items, but if a door swings open on a sharp turn or a window winder fails when a direction signal is necessary, both can have disastrous results. Carry full tool equipment, and include a spare ignition key, also a tow rope. Make sure the jack functions easily. Carry an electric torch. Have the car completely oiled and greased, flush radiator and check for leaks. Make sure bonnet clips function. It will be seen that if the above have been carefully checked the chances of a breakdown will be reduced to items beyond vour control, and these will prove to be surprisingly few.
