LONDON SEEDS MARKET
SELLING PRESSURE BY N.Z. MERCHANTS
There has been considerable selling pressure by New Zealand merchants in the small seeds market in the United Kingdom, but there is practically no demand from wholesale merchants there, according to the latest market review issued by the London office of the Bank of New Zealand. The approach of the new season’s crop has brought about offers at reduced prices. White Clover.—British traders are reported to be critical about earlier estimates of the crop, which with a carryover of 200 to 300 tons, was much larger than forecast. Prices have dropped to 560 s for mother seed, and permanent pasture is offered at 5455. Chewings Fescue.—New Zealand seed has lost favour since deliveries have not reached the high standard expected, and buyers have turned to the cheaper Oregon seed, with less impurity and good germination. Browntop.—With the small crop in New Zealand and higher prices asked, the market has been more interested in the Oregon samples below New Zealand prices. Crested Dogstail.—Prices for New Zealand seed are high, and attract only small purchases, where buyers require better colour than the Irish seed. Ryegrass.—Estimates of a very large crop in New Zealand have been confirmed by the number of offers received. Both mother and permanent pasture seed are now offered at 100 s per cwt, c.i.f., United Kingdom ports. H.l short rotation ryegrass can be bought at about 82s 6d per cwt, c.i.f. p eas .—Little business is reported in maples. A few small parcels of 1956 crop New Zealand's of below No. 1 grade have been sold up to 62s 6d, ci.f. for f.a.q. Offers of new crop for 1957 delivery have ceased.
