SHORT STORIES
Six Feet of the Country. By Nadine Gordimer. Gollancz. 223 pp.
This young South African writer has the gift of expressing a theme in a vivid spotlight of colour, which puts her in the top flight of short story writers. South Africa and its inhabitants give her the kind of material in which she can best show her penetrating insight into human weakness and strength. Each story shows another facet of her understanding of people, whether they be white, black, brown, or just colourless beings. Nadine Gordimer is an accomplished writer from the technical point of view. too. She has a firm sense of direction in the construction of a tale and her choice of words is correct.
